マシューとマリラは元々男の子を望んでいた。アンは、美しいグリーンゲイブルスから再び孤児院に戻ることを思うと憂鬱だった。マリラはいつものように坦々と家事をこなしている。一方マシューは、アンを残そうとマリラに話しを切り出せないでいる。

Matthew and Marilla originally wanted a boy. Anne was depressed at the idea of returning from the beautiful Green Gables to the orphanage. Marilla cleans the house quietly as usual. Matthew, on the other hand, is hesitant in speaking to her about letting Anne stay.
